No Game Today

The stakes barns at Pimlico Race Course remain as empty as a Carly Rae Jepsen song.

Two horses, Derby winner I’ll Have Another and Zetterholm, have the place to themselves. Not that anyone really did anything on a rainy Tuesday in Baltimore. The only horse left with a shot at the Triple Crown walked around a little and never left the barn area. Zetterholm took a bath. That’s about it. Even Doug O’Neill, trainer of I’ll Have Another, called it a day off. Weather permitting, O’Neill gets to toss out the first pitch tonight before the Orioles-Yankees game at Camden Yards. He has promised to bring the heat on the mound, boasting that he’s tossed around shampoo bottles in his hotel room for practice.

O’Neill acts like what horse racing needs. He’s a great soundbyte for the game. Doug has been accommodating for his almost week-long stay at Pimlico. Sure, there’s the article in the New York Times that paints the Derby winner with anything but roses. But we’ll save that story for another day. No one deserves that kind of inquisition as they prepare for the most important race of their career.

Two more horses are expected to ship in on Tuesday afternoon in the form of Graham Motion’s contender and D. Wayne Lukas’s effort to hit the board. The slow dance eventually gets to a foxtrot. We’re still waiting for the music to start.
