Tip Time

Maples Pavillion hosts 7,223 rabid Stanford University fans during the college basketball season. Just not tonight. In our first game of the 24-hour marathon, you can hear individual conversations as the kids flat out could care less about a 8:00 PM local tip time in northern California.

Stanford is hosting Fresno State in the regional quarterfinal of the NIT Tip Off. This acts as a warm-up game for the Cardinal, but they didn’t look good out of the gate. A combination of poor shot selection and flat-out chucked three-point attempts add up to a sloppy first half of basketball.

Fresno State started off the game shooting 6-20, which is about as good as how my SAT experience turned out in high school. That’s why I’m doing crazy things like watching basketball for 24 straight hours. The end of the first half summed up the performance of the two combatants to a tee. Four consecutive missed shots when both teams had a chance to take a last shot. Helter skelter basketball at its finest, which is never pleasant. Stanford holds a four point lead against a pesky, but almost certainly outmanned Fresno State team.

We await the tip at the McCarthey Athletic Center – otherwise known as the Kennel – between Washington State and Gonzaga.
