Lead Gone In A Flash

“Welcome back to scenic Morgantown, West Virginia.”

Sean McDonough, who was extraordinarily kind enough to talk with me last year (you can still listen to the podcast), has a knack for being incredibly dry and sincere at the same time. It’s a very rare quality and he’s one of the best play-by-play guys in the history of television. So, why is he calling a 10:00 games in the morning?

The crowd on hand at the start of the game between West Virginia and Kent State looked like an open practice with a pep band. I understand that kids have classes at 10 in the morning, but isn’t Morgantown all about West Virginia basketball? It’s not exactly the best showing for a team usually ranked in the top 25.

West Virginia played a sloppy brand of basketball in the first half, leading by five at the end of a completely lackluster first half. Then Ken State went on a 38-20 run. Completely and totally shocking – and no one saw this run coming. The Mountaineers couldn’t make anything all of a sudden and the Golden Flashes took a 13 point lead with less than four minutes to play.

The Mountaineers climbed within ten, but never really got it going. It’s a West Virginia team that looked completely & totally flat in the second half. Credit Kent State. They earned the victory.

Next up: Belmont vs. Memphis in a dandy. Hopefully
