Back Home Again

When did everyone stop caring?

The pageantry of the premier 500 mile race in the world turned into another race on another Sunday that follows the most intriguing race in the world in Monoco which ramps up to America’s race on Memorial Day weekend in Charlotte.

The Indy 500 has morphed into just another race on the IndyCar schedule.

Kids no longer dream of drinking milk in gasoline alley. Give a look at the starting lineup and tell me if you’ve heard of half of the field. The split of the IndyCar circuit that ended in IRL and CART destroyed the highlight of my May.

Every year, I’ve watched the Indy 500. All 200 laps. In 1997, it took three days to finish the race. It’s always been special to me and I’ve never stepped foot in the state of Indiana.

I’ll flip on the race on Sunday morning, mostly out of habit. The most important race of the year now acts as a pit stop.
