A Gimmie By Tiger

Tiger Woods shot a 71 on Thursday afternoon to post 1-under in the opening round of The Masters.

Under normal circumstances, that isn’t half bad. Today, it was awful.

Woods lurks six shots back of Rory McIlroy with three very long rounds to play. He still can’t consistently string together birdies and looks lost with his approach shots. Woods knows this course very, very well. He’s won the golf tournament four times. Tiger just can’t get out in front, something Woods needs to do if past performance is any indication of success.

Tiger’s last great shot to win a major came at the 2009 PGA Championship, where he lost to Y.E. Yang. A few moments ago on 13, Yang climbed to within two shots of McIlroy with an eagle.

There are moves to be made on this Thursday at Augusta. Tiger better hope that’s the case on Friday as well.
