Louie, Louie

Before a hung over party-goer wakes up on Sunday, they’ll crown a champion at Saint Andrews in Scotland.

Right now, you’ve never heard of the leader.

A few days ago, Louis Oosthuizen was introduced as Peter at the Open Championship Media Center. Golf writers and analysts have mispronounced his name all week. Heck, he’s gone on record pronouncing his name three different ways.

Let’s not forget that he’s 54th in the World Golf Ranking, has never won a major championship and has only won once on the European Tour.

Enough about stats for a second.

Oostie was composed all day. He nailed a 55-footer on the 16th hole on Saturday for birdie. Followed it up with a delicious par on the demanding 17th.

Oh, and he almost eagled 18 for a five shot lead.  After 54 holes. In The Open Championship. Pretty cool, right?

We’ve been here before this year. Lee Westwood lead after the third round in Augusta this year. The announcing crew at NBC carved in Dustin Johnson’s name after the third round at Pebble Beach last month, claiming the 0-time major winner was a “flat liner.”

Both of these guys lost on Sunday.

Oostie enters the final day with a sizable lead. No one disagrees with that. But can the South African follow in the recent footsteps of Trevor, Ernie & Retief?

Regardless of how you say it, Louis Oosthuizen has one hand on the Claret Jug. We may not know how to say his name, but we won’t forget his play at the Open.
