Sparkling or still?
They ask you this before every meal in Scotland. Trust me, I’ve been there.
I was lucky enough to see David Duval collapse and Tiger Woods win in 2000. Taking the trip with my Dad made it extra special.
Ten years later, golf’s next star thought it’d be a good time to show his full head of hair.
Northern Ireland’s major exports are chemicals and machinery. They also produce golfers. Damn good ones at that.
Rory McIlroy, this 21-year-old prodigy from this tiny country, fired the second-best round of his year as he tied the best round in major championship history. Not bad for a Thursday afternoon coming off of countryman Graeme McDowell’s win at the U.S. Open last month.
McIlroy went out early on the first day at The Open Championship, humiliating a defenseless St. Andrews. Shooting a 30 coming in, McIlroy missed a birdie putt on 17 to possibly card the best round in the history of the game.
Then again, he’s already shot a 62 this year. Did it in Charlotte on a Sunday. The kid made the cut on the number at the Quail Hollow and fired 66-62 on the weekend.
No one does things like this at this age with such consistency.
And so he sleeps on a lead at the world’s most important golf tournament.
Pretty sparkling start for a kid barely old enough to drink.
