He’s In Miami, Trick

Why does everyone hate LeBron James today?

The 25-year-old from Akron, Ohio who continues to entertain and exhilarate in nearly every game of his seven-year career all of a sudden receives more flack than Lindsay Lohan. First off, he’s taking a pay cut going to the Miami Heat. He has more money than anyone you know. He just wants to win a championship now.

When did this become a bad thing?

James left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat on Thursday night, but he didn’t stick a knife in the city’s collective back.

He’s a free agent.

Teams bid on his services.

Miami won. Cleveland lost.

Of all cities, they should be used to that by now.

I admit it’s not cool to call a press conference at a neutral site to announce that you will be leaving your legion of fans in Cleveland. On the other hand, his entire marketing team is young and foolish. Let’s not read too much into the announcement. He has a big ego. Is that a crime?

If you want someone to blame for what happened on Thursday night, blame Curt Flood. In the late 1960’s, Flood (along with a few other baseball players) pretty much established free agency in sports. Sadly, Flood passed away about a decade ago. I wonder what he would have thought of what happened on Thursday.

Whether you like LeBron or think he’s a traitor, one thing is certain. Everyone has an opinion and everyone will continue to watch him.

Seven years ago, LeBron James won the Mega Millions game. On Thursday night, he may have taken his first step towards a priceless goal — to win the Larry O’Brien trophy.

  1. Yes, he’s rich. Yes, he has a big ego. But if he didn’t love the game, he wouldn’t care about being on a championship team. I hope he gets his championship. And isn’t he great copy!
