The First Chance

For a crowd that was loud during both the Algerian and United States anthems, it turned almost silent once the action started this morning at Alonzo’s. It’s very rare that one game truly does means everything – and this is that game for the US. If they win, they make the knockout round. Anything else is very confusing.

The group has swelled to about 40 people – ranging from 5 months to 60 years. It’s officially standing room only time.

Sure, you have the usual soccer hooligans, but the crowd here takes on the shape of a group that just wants to be a part of something special – even if it’s a continent away.

The first chance in the game came in the fifth minute, a missed chance by Algeria that elicited early morning “oooh’s” and “aaaa’s” from everyone.

It’s a fireworks show in June.
