Believing In Miracles

Landon Donovan saved this Wednesday for a number of happy Americans at Alonso’s in Baltimore.

Scoring in extra time to defeat Algeria, the United States moves on to the knockout round of this exciting World Cup.

The amount of absolute patriotism that echoed through this tiny bar could be heard across the world in South Africa. The 90 minutes of frowns magically turned into smiles, hugs and elementary school chanting. It’s impossible to properly describe the noise that followed Donovan’s goal. I did notice that both babies weren’t crying or fussing after the jubilation. They knew it was a big deal.

And just as soon as they came in, the massive crowd filed out. The ultimate two hour lunch ends with their team – America’s team – advancing to another game. We’ll see you in the knockout round – if your heart can stomach it.

In the meantime, go search your newsfeed on Facebook. Odds are it says “U-S-A” or “Wow, what a goal!” This common game of soccer that the world shares continues to infuse itself in American culture.

It really helps to win though.
