I’ve bet on every Kentucky Derby for the last decade and still haven’t finished in the winners circle.
That’s probably not a great track record.
In fact, the only ticket I ever cashed was a place wager on Eight Belles, who sadly died after the race.
My pick this year doesn’t come from the experts at the Daily Racing Form or those wiseguys at TVG. This year I’m taking an approach that most amateur horseplayers use as their crutch – I’m betting the horse that bares my name.
Homeboykris, part owned by L.A. Dodgers mananger Joe Torre, will break from the gate 19 late on Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs. He’ll likely go off at some ridiculous odds that will pay off many student loan debts. Here’s hoping mine is one of them. Homeboykris hasn’t won a race since October of last year in the Champagne Stakes. In likely the high point of his career, Homeboykris crushed the stacked field, posted a near 90 Beyer number and bathed in the success of a champion 2-year-old.
Since then, he’s been very spotty.
Finishing off the board in his last two graded races and looking clumsy in an allowance race in February, the horse barely made the 20 horse field in Kentucky.
But he’s in with a shot.
You can’t ask for more than that.
