Just to prove that you can still compete in a golf tournament at age 50, Larry Mize leads the Masters on a Thursday afternoon.
Tied with Chad Campbell and Shingo Katayama (who’s in the house with a 67), Mize has hit 10 of 14 greens in his first round and has already made three birdies on the second nine. The 1987 winner will have to put together two more solid rounds to land in contention on Sunday afternoon, but it’s quite a start for a guy who hasn’t come close to winning a major in over 20 years.
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods continues to walk around Augusta without doing much of anything. Woods is still at even par on the 5th hole. On a day where a bunch of golfers have gone low, Woods hovers around the edges of “staying in the hunt.”
Then again, he shot a 40 on his first nine in 1997.
How did that turn out again?
