Escape From New York

If you had Brett Gardner in the “who will get the first hit of the game” pool, pat yourself on the back.

Gardner rocketed a Simon fastball into right field for the Yankees first hit of the day and put Alfredo in a little bit of a jam.

That jam is turning into jelly as backup catcher Chad Moeller just overshot Cesar Izturis and Gardner stole second.

Simon then walked 9th place hitter Jose Molina and Derek Jeter approaches home plate to a loud ovation and rhythmic clapping. Jeter hit one about 10 feet to move the runners up a base, but committed a costly second out in the inning.

Give Simon credit as he gets Johnny Damon to ground out to end the 3rd inning. Simon stomps on the bag after the assist from Aubrey Huff.

It’s still scoreless from a suddenly chilly Oriole Park.
